Debbie Barnett has been playing Mah Jongg for over 45 years. Her love for the game began at the Colony Beach & Tennis Club in East Haven, CT. After relocating to South Florida in 1988, she continued playing the game by organizing various social groups. In 2006, she decided to spread her passion for the game through teaching. She has since taught hundreds of students locally and at various venues, including a program for Leisure Time Tours held at the Boca Raton Resort & Spa.
Debbie has now taken her teaching to a higher level with a unique, interactive teaching platform. Students can now be taught in the comfort of their home on a desktop or tablet. The game works in the background, and the experience is like they were sitting around a table with her. Through Debbie's unique and concise teaching method, students will be sure to grasp all the rules and concepts needed to play this game independently.
Debbie also offers a lifetime mentorship to all her students. She understands that although students learn the rules during class, there are times they will forget. The mentorship allows them to text her with a question and even send a picture of their hand or exposure that might say, "Can I do this?" or "Can I use a Joker in a pair?" etc. She feels the mentorship is especially vital during the first year of playing socially, where the most significant learning curve is encountered.
Michele Frizzell has a passion for mah jongg! As a child, she watched her Filipino grandfather play with his friends, and it mystified her. In 1973 Michele's mother, Carolyn learned how to play Wright-Patterson Mah Jongg which is a popular version in the military community. Carolyn taught Michele how to play so she could practice at home and mahjong became their bond. Carolyn quickly became an avid player, instructor, and group leader. Both Carolyn and Michele learned to play by National Mah Jongg League rules in 1990. This is when Michele began to lead groups and teach others how to play like her mother. Carolyn passed away from cancer in 2004, and that was the pivotal moment when Michele began her mission to share the joys of mah jongg with others in honor of her mother.
Through the years, Michele has become an advanced player of several styles.
- National Mah Jongg League ~ Complex
- Wright-Patterson ~ Distinctive
- Hong Kong ~ Fast and flexible
- Riichi ~ Tactical
What makes Michele unique is that she can use other versions of the game to adapt strategies for American mah jongg. Shy shares these strategies with her students to give them an edge at the table. Anyone who has learned to play from Michele speaks highly of her creative approach to learning and great patience as a teacher. Sign up for a lesson today, and let Michele demystify the captivating game of mah jongg so you can play with confidence and open the floodgates of joy into your life.
